Anytime somebody asks me what industry I want to get in, I know i am opening a can worms with the response film. A small moan is usually uttered from the persons mouth and a train of negative assessments of the industry are listed off as if theyve personally done market research on the topic. Depending on the person, ill either shrug in non-combative agreement, say Im also getting my degree incase it doesnt work out, or if im feeling REAL squirrely, ill come back with my personal favorite...Well you better hope the movie industry gets better because in harsh economic times like these, imagine how depressed you would be if you didnt have movies to see and music to listen to in order to break the everyday monotony of your life. (Making it personal always seems to shut people up).
Whatever the general consensus of the industry is and regardless of the current economic times, movies will still get made and audiences will still amass; Sherlock holmes opening day 24,000,000 - previous christmas day record was 14,000,000. Transformers 2, 400,000,000 this summer. The Hangover (a comedy remember) 277,000,000, paranomal activity (made for only 11,000), 107,000,000. Mind you these are only domestic numbers. And if still you arent convinced, Lets take a look at Cameron's Avatar shall we. Currently with a international total of 615,000,000, projections place it to make over a billion dollars in tickets sales before it even leaves theaters (Titanic has grossed about 1.5 billion in all sales to date). So if 2009 wasn't a good year for film, with over 10 billion dollars in revenue, idk what is.
With this initial "Sunday Screenings" rant outta the way, I leave you with three movie reviews to help make deciding how you want to spend that $10 a little bit easier.
Blockbuster of the week
Sherlock Holmes: Directed by Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Layer Cake, Lock, Stock...)
Not a great film but a real good one that will keep you entertained without you ever realizing you just sat in one place for two and a half hours. The production quality is superb and is comparable to the large productions of old,( when in reality, you can pretty much assume anything farther than 50 ft from the camera isnt actually there.) In a quarky 19th century version of Bourne Identity, Sherlock Holmes, held together by two solid performances by Robert Downey and Jude Law, delivers on many accounts and will be a solid bet on any night.
Future Favorite of the week
Hurt Locker: Kathryn Bigelow (k-19 the Widowmaker)
The first true modern war movie post September 11, (Jarhead was about Desert Storm) Hurt Locker takes you inside the minds of members of a military bomb squad unit in the Middle East. Its intense, engaging and real, giving you a solid representation of the day to day game of life and death our military soldiers face. Imagine a world where nothing is safe, everything is a possible threat, where one wrong interpretation is the difference between living or dieing and tell me you would always make rational decisions for the greater good...Hurt Locker is a must see before the Academy Awards (more to come about this later).
Music Video of the week:
Example Watch the Sun Come Up
Not much to say. A Catchy tune, a hot chick, and an out of country fling. Viski would probably agree, what could be better?
